Read MoreA few months ago, a regular reader suggested that I start doing Quick Tips videos. I happened to be doing some testing on the Blackmagic Design Micro Studio Cameras, and shot four videos. I then promptly forgot about them and only edited one. This is it and it covers a very fast introduction to the topic of dynamic range. It's not super in depth, but it will get you up to speed pretty quickly. Enjoy and if you like the video, please leave a message in the comments.
A lot of New Year's resolutions are less resolution and more wishful thinking. At least many of mine have been in the past. But I make the effort each year, sometimes later deciding that I no longer want to go that route, sometimes dropping the resolution entirely and sometimes fulfilling it. Makes me human, I suppose. Excuses and defences aside for the past, here's what I am looking to do from a creative perspective in 2018. Perhaps one or more may inspire you.

Read MoreOver the last couple of weeks, I've run into a series of questions from folks pertaining to white balance and colour temperature. There is some confusion apparently around equating the two and I think that this is worth a conversation.

Read MoreI really don't think that there was as much hype and expectation around a DSLR in 2017 than what surrounded the release and shipment of Nikon's D850. Check out my deep dive review and find out if the expectations were fulfilled. (HINT oh yeah!)
Read MoreI warn folks up front that this is not a how-to, or solution oriented post on making tethering work in Lightroom. That has been covered in many classes by Scott Kelby and others, including myself. Mostly it involves prayer, a blood sacrifice of some creature at least chicken sized, speaking in tongues and gnashing of teeth. Then it works until it doesn't.
Read MoreLet's be honest. None of us creatives want to work for nothing. We get annoyed when a prospect spends a lot of time learning from us, and then gives the business to some dork who will do the job a little cheaper and with a lot less skill. Now consider who and where you get your photo and video gear from.

Read MoreI want to change that blather about the best camera being "the one that you have with you" to "the best camera to always have with you". Face it, smartphones are wonderful devices, but great foundations for photography they are not. There's a massive difference between taking pictures and making photographs, and if photography is important to you, you want to do the latter, not the former.
Read MoreAs you may know, I provide support and moderation on some different photography forums, and as often comes around, the subject of grain and noise has appeared again, and as is common, the subject is accompanied by an ocean going freighter filled with bullcrap, pseudo science and completely wrong so-called "facts".

Read MoreDo you know which is the fastest growing space in dedicated cameras these days? As you’ve likely guessed it’s mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras. In fact outside of North America, mirrorless is killing it, we appear to be more conservative here, and part of that may be the number of completely invalid ideas about mirrorless. Time for an episode of Mythbusters, The Photo Video Guy style.
